10 – Narr

SUMMARY

1.       A narrative is a text that tells a story. The story can be realistic, fantastic, or a mix of both. The goal of a narrative is to connect the reader with the text, rhe characters and events that occur within the story.

2.       The events of a narrative can:
·         entertain the reader,
·         teach the reader,
·         provide a lesson or a moral,
·         evoke certain feelings from the reader.

3.       A narrative can take many different forms. It can be written, spoken, illustrated or even sung.
Some examples of narrative include:
·         films or television programmes,
·         picture books or comic strips,
·         fairytales, my.ths or legends,
·         fiction stories or novels,
·         ballads or songs,
·         short stories.

4.       A narrative consists of:
·         Orientation
This part presents the settings of the story and introduces the characters involved.

·         Complications
The story continues here. Usually, there is an event or a sequence of events that lead the characters into a complication (some form of conflict that disrupts the normal event). Tension starts to build up to a climax and this draws anticipation in the readers.

·         Resolution
The problem starts to get resolved. Sometimes the story ends happily or vice versa and at other times the resolution (i.e. the ending of the story) is left for the readers to decide.

5.       Grammatical features of narration text:
·         past tense,
·         action verbs,
·         connectors,
·         compound and complex sentences

When the squirrel asked for the gold promised, the tiger got angry. "How dare you ask for gold," said the tiger. "You are lucky that I didn't bite your head off when you were in my mouth."

One cold and windy night, we went to bed late for a big soccer match. Suddenly, we heard an old lady moaning from the neighbouring house. I knew the voice. lt must be the old lady who lived next to my house. She was living with her sickly husband. Their only son was living in Balikpapan. Everybody knew that they refused to live in Balikpapan with him. So, everybody in my neighbourhood always came in aid of their daily needs.
The old lady kept moaning. Directly, we went down and rushed to their house. Some burglars had likely entered their house through the side window that had been broken for several days. When we arrived there, two men had appeared to help them. The burglars tied them to a chair and took away their saving and a few jewels. The two men soon tried to untie the woman and her  husband and then offer them something to drink.
We run out to check whether the burglars were still around and called the police Before long, two patrol cars screeched to a halt in front of our house. Two police officers get off the car and rushed in the house. They searched the house thoroughly and collected some information from eyewitnesses, including us. From them, we knew that their monthly budget money and their pension had been stolen.
The following day, we called their son. He directly booked flight to Jakarta. When he appeared, he persuaded the old couple to stay with them in Balikpapan. Despite the robbery, the couple were reluctant to go to Balikpapan. We tried to convince the old couple that living with his son is the best choice. At last, the old couple agreed to live with him in Balikpapan. The couple thanked us for our help and said goodbye to us.

One morning, I was on my bike to the school. When I reached the T-junction, I was very shocked knowing that the wooden bridge fell down. Just a couple of days ago the same bridge stood proudly over the small sturdy road. After school, I used to stop over at the T Junction and walked to the bridge. I spent some times enjoying the cold wind that mildly blew my face. I usually saw an old woman feeding the birds under the big bars of the bridge. Then, I was worried,"What if she was asleep when the bridge fell down?"
I felt a strong desire to find her. I got off my bike and rushed to the broken bridge. I crawled among the wooden bars. I focused my eyes and my ears to find the old woman. After some minutes, I heard a faint cooing noise somewhere in the darkness.
When I got closer, I knew it was the sound of birds that the old woman usually fed. They looked swollen and their eyes betrayed a look of death. "You poor thing, look at you!" lexclaimed. They drove me to reach a spot ass soon as possible.
I had to be very careful because the wooden piles possibly buried me. Then. I was shocked. ln the small hole, I saw the old woman was lying still, dead. She was surrounded by the birds. Then, I fell onto my knees beside her, trying to hold the tears back. The sorrowful cries of the birds didn't make it any easier. I buried my face in my hands and cried.

Then, the phone rang. He walked down to pick the phone. lt was his friend, Leo. Leo asked Rony to come over his house to watch a new film. Rony was happy to come. They watched the film in Leo's room. The film titled Giant Dumpsite. The film was about how people shouldn't make a mess. Leo chose the film to remind Rony about his bad habit. lt was told in the film that in the future the world would become a massive dumpsite. Rony watched the film attentively.
At home he immediately began to clean up his room. His mum was amazed. She thanked Leo for the idea. Rony also went to clean up the mess at.the shop. "l guess I won't be messy anymore!" he said.

Then, he met a woman who was making cheese. He kept his eyes on what the woman did. He thought it was an easy job. So, he asked the woman to work with her to make cheese. After an hour working, he began to get hot and tired. He stopped to rest. But, the woman said, "Don't take a rest now. You will spoil the cheese. You can rest when the work is over." Then, the farmer thought that it was very hard work, even it was harder than farm work.
He, then, tried to find another job. He saw a man taking honey out of a beehive. The farmer liked eating honey. He thought it was an easy job. So, he asked to work for the man. The man agreed and the farmer started working with him. While the farmer tried to take honey out of the beehive, the bees attack him and stung him on his face. He dropped the honey and ran away. The beekeeper laughed, "Hahaha, it was part of the job."
The farmer began to think. He said to himself, "Every kind of work has some bad things about it. Working on my farm isn't too bad after all." Soon the farmer was back on his farm. He worked harder than before and he was singing as he was working.

The Morning Glory wanted to appear to the baby bird so that he could see the flowers by himself. The Morning Glory, never moved before, but now she pulled herself along the ground, a little then more and then a little more. At last, the Morning Glory came to the tree and climbed it to the peak of the tree and found the nest. The baby bird saw it and was very happy to see its beauty. From that day, the Morning Glory climbs.
